Orange Round Ambassador: Cayte Hoppner

Cayte Hoppner
AFL Gippsland Region Commissioner

I grew up in a football family. My Dad played football and our Saturdays were spent at the footy and netball club. The club was a huge part of my life as a young child and a teenager. I would say that our family was pretty football obsessed and I have barracked for Collingwood since I was born (Thanks Mum). To be honest I had never questioned the role of equality in sport when I was growing up.

I was always told that I could do anything and be anything I wanted. So that’s what I grew up believing.  I played hockey on the weekends and got involved in sports at primary and secondary school. I didn’t feel like my gender somehow excluded me from being involved or participating.

Over the years through my career as a nurse and a mental health professional, I have seen firsthand the very devastating impacts of gender inequality. Gender inequality is unacceptable. I am now in a position of privilege to be able to break down rigid gender roles and encourage young men and women to follow their dreams.

My work experience has led me to be a part of the AFL Gippsland Commission which is a position I love. It enables me to share my skills in managing organisations, leadership and governance as well as allowing me to talk about footy. A lot.

I am actively involved in local and Collingwood football activities and I volunteer at my local club. Sporting clubs and organisations hold such a special place for so many people including me. They have an important role to play. And so do we. As leaders, community members and fellow footy fans.

We are all equal.
